Drawings of Subject Matter

Here I have drawn out things that I would expect to see on a typical mothers day card, or would like to use on my set of mothers day card. I really liked the idea of using flowers or hearts repeatedly throughout a whole front cover and I think that is something I will use in my drafting ideas when i draw out my own front cover ideas. I also like the idea of having a mug or maybe a book on the front cover, and I will make sure I experiment with that idea aswell.

I have tried to not draw out too much because I want to mainly focus on the typography for many of the front covers, but drawing out small ideas has helped me get an idea of what I could feature somewhere on the card.

To get inspiration for my own set of cards i decided to go and look at other examples. I went to telcos and looked at a range of different cards on offer, mainly focusing on the cards specifically for mothers. I think this really helped me get an idea of what types of things are seen on different styles of Mother's Day cards, and the humour that is used in them.

Scamps of Others

These are the scamps I have drawn to give me ideas for my own mother's day cards. I went onto Pinterest and the websites of card companies and drew the ones that stood out to me most, and ones that I hope my final pieces to look like. I first drew them out with pencil and then went over them in fineliner.

Here are many of the thing I have pinned on Pinterest which have given me inspiration for my designs. Using this board throughout this unit has really helped me to develop my ideas further and get an idea of what looks successful on a mother's day card and what doesn't.

Brainstorm and Brief

Here is my brainstorm for unit 2. I have put the exam topic in the middle and thought about all the things to do with the theme of relationships, i think this really helped me decide what I want to do for my final piece. At first I decided I wanted to design packaging for a chocolate company for a Valentines Day special, but soon realised that this would be difficult and decided to re-think what I wanted to do.

Brief: Design a set of cards for the new company, Best Wishes, who are selling special sets of cards for Mother's Day. Aimed at people of all ages who want a unique card for their mother, grandmother, or wife soon-to-be mum.
